NEVER BEEN THIS LONELY
Berlin Art Week

NEVER BEEN THIS LONELY presents six younger artists from Armenia and offers an opportunity to discover contemporary art from the small country in the Caucasus region that borders Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkey.

The artists play with traditional craft techniques such as embroidery, beadwork and textile work. For centuries these techniques have been associated with inferior women’s work and not classified as fine arts. Only recently have they begun to receive the recognition and admiration they deserve, thanks to venturous artists like those gathered in our exhibition.

Hovig would say: More power to them!

These young artists are very proud and honored to exhibit their work next to one of the most important painters of Armenia: Hagop Hagopian.

Hagop Hagopian was born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1923 as son of refugees who had fled Armenia during the Armenian genocide. He lived and studied in Cairo and Paris before returning with his family to his parents’ homeland in 1962. He died in Armenia in 2013.

To pay homage to one of the country’s important artists, the National Gallery of Armenia exhibited 100 works to mark the 100th birthday of Hagop Hagopian in 2023.

We are very proud to have worked with his daughter Sis, who lives in Canada, to realize this exhibition of her father’s work during the Berlin Art Week.
